ELAT
English Literature Admissions Test (Oxford)
Test Information:
The ELAT is a pre-interview admissions test for applicants to undergraduate courses in English at the University of Oxford. The test is designed to enable applicants to show their ability in the key skill of close reading, in addition to paying attention to elements such as the language, imagery, allusion, syntax and form within the structure of the passages set.
ELAT is a 90-minute paper-based test comprising of one essay question comparing two or three passages of text. It is not a test of wide reading, nor is it based on the assumption that there are certain texts that all students should have read by this stage in their education. Marks will not be awarded for reference to other texts or authors, nor will applicants be expected to try to apply any theoretical frameworks to their essay. The test will be only one of the elements admissions tutors use to decide whether to invite an applicant for interview.
Results will only be released to applicants to one of the courses requiring ELAT at the University of Oxford.
A statement of results will be issued to each applicant on Friday 14th January 2011. Applicants and centres will be able to download their results using Oxford’s online results extranet. Information about how to retrieve results will be provided to centres and applicants at the time of the test.
