GAMSAT UK
Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (UK)
Test Information:
GAMSAT is a professionally designed and marked selection test developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) for medical schools offering graduate-entry programmes open to graduates of any discipline. GAMSAT UK has been devised specifically for use by UK Medical and Dental Schools.
The purpose of GAMSAT UK is to assess your ability to understand and analyse material and, to think critically about issues. GAMSAT UK questions are based on material drawn from a variety of sources. They typically require candidates to read and think about a passage of writing, to interpret graphical displays of information, to use mathematical relationships and to apply reasoning skills to tables of data. Problem solving is a major focus of the test which is divided into three sections over five and a half hours with a one hour break for lunch:
Section 1: Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences comprises of 75 questions to be answered over 100 minutes. This section tests skills in the interpretation and understanding of ideas in social and cultural contexts.
Section 2: Written Communication comprises of two 30 minute writing tasks and is a test of the ability to produce and develop ideas in writing.
Section 3: Reasoning in Biological and Physical Sciences comprises of 110 questions over a 170 minute period. This section is made up of questions in three discipline areas in the following proportions: Chemistry 40%, Biology 40%, Physics 20%. In addition to testing problem solving within a scientific context, this section examines the recall and understanding of basic science concepts.
If your first degree is in a non-scientific field of study you can still sit GAMSAT UK and be chosen for admission to the graduate-entry programmes. A science background is not a prerequisite and academic excellence in the humanities and social sciences is encouraged and recognised. However, it must be stressed that success in GAMSAT UK is unlikely without knowledge and ability in the biological and physical sciences.
