Test Information:

STEP Mathematics is a series of three papers used to supplement GCE A levels in assessing applicants' aptitude for university study in Mathematics. The questions are of a searching kind designed to test qualities such as insight, originality, grasp of broader issues and the ability to use standard techniques in unusual ways and situations.

There are three Mathematics papers each lasting 3 hours, calculators are not allowed. Candidates are usually required to sit either one or two of the examinations, depending on the requirements of the universities they have applied to. The content of Mathematics III is wider and only suitable for candidates studying for Further Mathematics.

STEP Mathematics I: Comprises of 13 questions - 8 Pure Mathematics, 3 Mechanics and 2 Probability and Statistics based on A Level Mathematics content. Candidates should choose any 6 questions to answer

STEP Mathematics II: Comprises of 13 questions - 8 Pure Mathematics, 3 Mechanics and 2 Probability and Statistics based on A Level Mathematics content. Candidates should choose any 6 questions to answer

STEP Mathematics III: Comprises of 13 questions - 8 Pure Mathematics, 3 Mechanics and 2 Probability and Statistics based on A Level Further Mathematics content. Candidates should choose any 6 questions to answer

Candidates and centres will be able to download their results using the online results extranet. Information about how to retrieve results will be provided to centres and candidates at the time of the test.

Taken at - Typically, candidates sit the STEP at their school or college. Candidates who do not attend a school or college will need to find an open centre where they can take the test. Candidates who cannot find a centre should contact the STEP Support Team.

When - pre-interview 20 June 2011 PM (STEP II), 22 June 2011 PM (STEP III), 24 June 2011 AM (STEP I)

Duration - each paper is 3 hours

How much - standard entry fee per paper is £41.45 for entries until 5pm on 29 April 2011, for entries from 30 April to 27 May 2011 a late entry fee applies at £55.20 per paper.
Some centres may add an administration fee in addition to the STEP entry fee, this is at the centre's discretion. Any entry made between 30th April and 27th May 2011 which is subsequently withdrawn will incur a late entry fee of £13.75 per paper.

Fee reimbursement/bursary - not available

Test required by - Candidates who have received offers for Mathematics courses at the University of Cambridge will normally be required to sit STEP as a post-interview test. The University of Warwick also includes STEP in its undergraduate Mathematics offers; the University of Bristol, the University of Oxford, Imperial College London and the University of Bath all encourage applicants to take the papers.
