Admission to higher education art and design courses - good practice principles

Following the Delivery Partnership recommendation that there should be a simplification of the art and design process for admission to higher education (HE) and subsequent removal of Route B, in 2010 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the UK admitted students to art and design courses via a concurrent admissions system, with a deadline for equal consideration of either 15 January or 24 March.

The changes coincided with a sharp rise in applications at many HEIs; this and the move from the sequential Route B process presented a number of challenges for the HE sector, but also provided opportunities as HEIs potentially saw greater numbers of suitable applications. Under the Route B system many very good applicants would have been made offers by their first choice institution, been placed and not seen by any other HEI.

SPA has identified some areas of good practice and considerations which we think are valuable to share with the pre-HE and HE sectors to assist with the planning and management of admissions in the future. This guidance initially responded to feedback on the new system which was collected by UCAS during the 2010-11 admissions cycle, and has subsequently been updated for the 2011-12 admissions round
