HEFCE Student Number Controls in Admissions 2012
In June 2011 BIS published its HE White Paper for England, titled 'Students at the Heart of the System', charging HEFCE to, "Move away from the tight number controls that constrain individual higher education institutions, so that there is a more dynamic sector," but also to, "Manage this transition carefully to avoid unnecessary instability and keep within the overall budget." HEFCE's consultation on creating a dynamic yet stable system ran from June to September 2011 and its final statement was published on 17 October of that year.
SPA has worked closely with HEFCE, UUK and UCAS on interpreting the impact of these changes on 2012 admissions and ran a number of surgery events for HE practitioners to understand and share solutions. Although specific to England, the nature of the UK-wide HE admissions market means these changes affect both institutions and applicants in other UK countries.
SPA is happy to support HEIs throughout this transition period, particularly as acceptances are made and institutions plan for Confirmation and Clearing. Please contact us if you wish to discuss any issues further.
