SPA is working with Stand Alone and UCAS to explore how HE providers can support estranged students throughout the applicant experience, from pre-application to transition.
We are delighted to support the Stand Alone Pledge. The Pledge, launched in October 2016, is a commitment from HE providers to develop support for estranged students in the four areas where these students feel the lack of family support the most: finance, accommodation, outreach and transition, and mental health and wellbeing. Further information about the Pledge, and letters of commitment from HE providers, can be found on the Stand Alone Pledge website.
We are keen to hear from anyone who already has support in place, in admissions, for estranged students. If you have any examples which could be beneficial to developing new good practice resources on this topic, please get in touch with us via firstname.lastname@example.org.
The case studies in our good practice on using admissions to bridge the gap for care leavers include examples of support provision for both care leavers and estranged learners.
Stand Alone is keen to ensure estranged students become more visible, and can be brought into the support networks of HE providers. They have recently written a blog for UCAS entitled 'Why is identifying estranged young people in HE crucial?'.
