Chapter B2: Recruitment, selection and admission to higher education
The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) is responsible for safeguarding standards and improving the quality of UK higher education.
The QAA's UK Quality Code for Higher Education sets out the Expectations that all HE providers are required to meet. The Quality Code sets out the following Expectation about recruitment, selection and admission to higher education:
“Recruitment, selection, and admission policies and procedures adhere to the principles of fair admission. They are transparent, reliable, valid, inclusive and underpinned by appropriate organisational structures and processes. They support higher education providers in the selection of students who are able to complete their programme.”
Chapter B2: Recruitment, selection and admission to higher education (2013) focuses on the interconnected policies and procedures related to the recruitment, selection and admission of students to HE. It is intended to help HE providers assure themselves and others that the policies and procedures they use are clear, fair, explicit and consistently applied.
The chapter details ten Indicators of sound practice for how HE providers may meet the Expectation, ensuring that the principles of fair admissions are embedded throughout. The first four Indicators have been clustered together to cover all stages of recruitment, selection and admission, whilst the remaining six Indicators relate to specific stages only.
Chapter B2 makes frequent reference to SPA's good practice and other resources. The following support materials may be of use for HE providers seeking to assess their own policy and practice and to ensure that it meets the QAA's Expectations.
